    Good Afternoon,

I am hoping that you may be able to help me fill in a few gaps in my father’s RAF career. He joined the RAF as an Apprentice Instrument Fitter at the age of 16 in August 1939. On completion of his technical training he volunteered for aircrew duties in 1943 and, after some “ab initio” flying aptitude training at 29 EFTS at Clyffe Pyppard in Wiltshire, England, he was posted to Canada for pilot training under the BCATP scheme, initially at 26 EFTS Neepawa from January to April 1944 and then 6 SFTS at Dunnville from May to November 1944.

His name was Bernard Modley and his service number was 576524. As far as I can tell, whilst at Dunnville and Neepawa he was a Corporal. On return to the UK he was promoted to Sergeant and posted to RAF Sealand for advanced flying training from January to May 1945. As a regular serviceman rather than a hostilities only conscript, he was given the option of continuing as aircrew or reverting to his ground trade. He opted to return to engineering and went on to enjoy a full career in the RAF, retiring as Flt Lt in 1975.

According to his (RCAF) pilots log book (and his RCAF Form R 95 A), he graduated from 6 SFTS on 17th November 1944, which would have made him part of course 106 – the last course at Dunnville before closure. I have approached the museum at Dunnville, who tell me that there is no record of him on the nominal role for course 106. The museum has very kindly sent me a copy of the RAF and RAAF/RNZAF course 106 nominal roles, together with a course photo of both sections, taken in July 1944. His log book shows that his last flight at Dunnville was on 6th November 1944.

I would be most grateful if you could throw any light on his time at both 26 EFTS and 6 SFTS. We have a (very) few personal photos of his time in Canada. Would be particularly interested in any photos of major events such as the Course 106 Wings Graduation Parade.

    Many thanks.

    Kind regards,

    Peter Modley
