Carberry, Man.
1944

  • 1st August
    • 1940 – The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • G/C. D.H. McCaul, C.A.E.O., No. 2 Training Command, R.C.A.F., arrived by air to carry out the A.O.C’s Staff Inspection of Maintenance Wing.
    • G/C. McCaul departed by air at 17.40 hours.
    • 1750 – The Station Team played A.35, C.P.T.C at Camp Shilo, in the Brandon and District Services Softball league. Result Carberry 11 – Shilo 3.
    • 1830 to 1930 – Two Inter-Hut Football and an Inter-Section Cricket League matches were played.
    • 1945 – The Station Chaplain commenced a new series of Confirmation Classes.
  • 2nd August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0940 – G/C. J.S. Scott, S.A.S.O., No. 2 Training Command, R.C.A.F., arrived by air to carry out the A.O.C.’s Staff Inspection of Training. G/C. Scott departed by air at 15.07 hours.
    • 1000 – F/O. Tremblay (CAN.C.7185) No. 2 Training Command Signals Officer, arrived by air from No. 12 S.F.T.S. to carry out the A.O.C’s Staff inspection of the Signals Section. F/O. Tremblay departed by
      air at 1040 hours.
    • 1630 – F/L. G.A. Kelly (C.20808) No. 2 Training Command, C & E.O. arrived by air from No. 17 S.F.T.S. to carry out an Aerodrome Maintenance Inspection.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League match was played.
    • 1845 – A party of airmen were conveyed to Brandon to swim in the Y.M.C.A. pool.
    • 1900 – The Small-bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 1945 – The Music Club held its weekly programme of recorded music in the G.I.S. Block.
    • 2100 – Housey-Housey in the Recreation Hall.
  • 3rd August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1430 – A category “A” accident occurred at a point 5 miles north and 2½ miles west of Cyprus River, Man. No. 1625385 LAC. Rothwell, J (Pupil Pilot) whilst carrying out authorised experimental flying in Anson II No. JS.21S was practising stalling; the aircraft went into a spin from which he was unable to recover and he abandoned the aircraft at 4,500 feet, making a safe descent and landing uninjured. This accident is the subject of an investigation.
    • 1630 – F/L.G.A. Kelly, C & E.O., No. 2 Training Command departed by rail for No. 2 Training Command on completion of his inspection of Aerodrome Maintenance.

1944 Carberry

  • 3rd August (Cont)
    • 1830 – A Station Trial Cricket match was played.
    • 1830 to 1900 – Two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played.
    • 1900 – The Station Softball Team played H.Q. Camp Shilo at Shilo in a Brandon and District Services league match and lost 5 – 6.
  • 4th August
    • S/L. G. Howard, AFC, assumed command of No. 33 S.F.T.S., R.A.F. Carberry vice W/C. D. Kinnear, AFC., AFM., on leave.
    • 21 hours only were fit for flying owing to night thunder storms.
    • 1015 – W/C. R.S. Cross (C.22l3) S.O.S.O., and S/L. Primrose (C2784), S.P.S.O., No. 2 Training Command, R.C.A.F., arrived by air to carry out the A.O.C.’s Staff Inspection of Personnel, Administration and Organisation, and departed by air at 1220 hours.
  • 5th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 2000 – The Station Football XI won the Inter-Command Championship of Western Canada, beating No. 36 S.F.T.S., R.A.F. Penhold at Calgary by 7 goals to 1.
  • 6th August
    • G/C. J.S.T. Fall, DSC., AFC., resumed command of No. 33 S.F.T.S. R.A.F. Carberry, Manitoba vice S/L. Howard, AFC., on return from leave.
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The usual church services were held during the day.
    • 1520 – G/C. O.G. Ridley, Equipment Liaison Officer, United Kingdom Air Liaison Mission visited the Unit, arriving by air from Winnipeg.
    • 1630 – P/O. T.W. Strong (177160) G.D., departed on posting to No. 6 O.T.U. Comox, B.C .
  • 7th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1800 – The Station Football XI played No. 32 S.F.T.S. R.A.F. at Moose Jaw, on their return from Calgary. Result: Carberry 2, Moose Jaw 1.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League match was played off.
    • 1900 – A recorded session of popular jazz tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
      2000 – The Music Club, R.I., Petrel held its weekly meeting when a recorded programme of classical music was played.
  • 8th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0845 – W/C. W.M. Murray (C151), Command Equipment Officer arrived on the Unit to carry out the A.O.C’s Staff Inspection of Equipment, Messing and M.T. 
    • 0960 – G/C. O.G. Ridley departed by air for Estevan on completion of his Liaison visit.

1944 Carberry.

  • 8th August (Cont)
    • 1100 – W/C. A.R. Sinclair (C2631) Command Accountant Officer, accompanied by S/L. A.D. Goodliffe (RAF79332), Accountant Officer No. 1 Training Command and F/O. G. King (C47147) Accountant Officer, No. 2 Training Command, arrived by air to carry out the A.O.C’s Staff Inspection of the Public and Non-Public Funds, departing by air for No. 2 Training Command at 1800 hours.
    • 1200 – F/O. Corness (153142) G.D. departed on posting to No. 6 O.T.U. Comox, B.C.
    • 1830 – An Inter Section Cricket League was played.
  • 9th August
    • 20 hours only were fit for flying.
    • 0915 – W/C. W.M. Murray departed by air for No. 3 B & G.S. Macdonald, on completion of his staff inspection.
    • 1200 – A Category “D” forced landing was made at No. 17 S.F.T.S. Souris by F/O. D.T. Bowen (151713) due to a serious oil leak in the starboard engine of Anson II JS.118. A successful single engine landing was made.
    • 1300 – P/O. J.C.S. Miles, (175348) G.D., departed on posting to No. 6 O.T.U. Comox, B.C.
    • 1830 to 1930 – Two Inter-Hut Football League matchesand an Inter Section Cricket League match were played off.
    • 1845 – A party of airmen were conveyed by bus to Brandon to swim in the Y.M.C.A. pool.
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 1945 – The music club met in the G.I.S. Block and enjoyed a progranme of recorded classical music.
    • 2100 – Housey-Housey in the Recreation Hall.
  • 10th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1100 – F/L. Eastwood (C7146) Command R.T.O. visited the Unit, arriving by air from No. 2 Training Command. F/L. Eastwood returned to No. 2 T.C. by rail at 16.30 hours on completion of his inspection.
    • Three Inter-Hut Football matches were played off during the evening.
    • 1900 – The Station Softball team played A.35 C.P.T.C. at Camp Shilo in a Brandon and District services League match. Result: A.35 C.P.T.C. 15, 33 SFTS – Nil.
  • 11th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1400 – S/L. T.E. Kirk (C4050) P.M.O. visited the Unit, arriving by air from No. 2 Training Command.
    • 1730 – W/C. Rev. J. Rossie-Brown (90202) Protestant Staff Chaplain, A.F.H.Q. arrived to spend two days on the Unit.

Carberry 1944

  • 12th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0830 S/L. T.E. Kirk, P.M.O., departed by air for No. 26 E.F.T.S., Neepawa, Man., on completion of his inspection.
    • 1430 This Station Cricket XI played No. 3 Wireless School, Winnipeg “C” Team in a Winnipeg and District League match at Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg. Result: No. 3 W.S. 95 runs – No. 33 SFTS. 96 runs for 8 wickets.
  • 13th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • In addition to the usual Church Services a Church of Scotland Communion Service was conducted by W/C. Rev. J. Rossie-Brown in the Chapel at 1000 hours.
  • 14th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1330 F/L. F.E. McCaren (J17371), Aircrew Leadership Training Officer, A.F.H.Q., and F/O. T.B. Dooley (J27897) No. 2 Training Command arrived by air in connection with Aircrew Leadership Training and “Gen Clubs”.
    • 1330 Eight competitors from the Unit attended No. 2 T.C. (No. 4 Area) Trade and Field Championships at No. B. & G.S., Macdonald and secured 14 points, finishing last out of six stations.
    • 1630 W/C. Rev. J. Rossie-Brown, Staff Chaplain, A.F.H.Q., departed by rail for No. 2 T.C.
    • 1830 – 1930 – An Inter Section Cricket League and two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played.
    • 1900 – A recorded session of popular jazz tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 2000 – The Music Club, Petrel, played a recorded programme of classical music.
  • 15th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1200 – S/L. E.S. Hogg (70312) G.D., reported on posting from No. 32 S.F.T.S. Moose Jaw; relief for W/C. D. Kinnear, AFC., AFM., Chief Instructor, posted to No. 31 P.D. Moncton for repatriation.
    • 1730 – No. 1816391 LAC. Bayliss, A.D., Pupil Pilot, with No. 903209 LAC Bennett, G.G. successfully forced landed Anson II No. 8641 one mile east of Kamsack owing to failure of starboard engine. Category “D”.
    • 1830 – 1930 – An Inter-Section Cricket League and two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played.
    • 1900 – The Station Softball team played headquarters Camp Shilo in a Brandon and District Services League match at Shilo and won 8-6.
  • 16th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0850 – No. 1014251 LAC. Davis, W., Clerk/G.D. died in Ninette Sanitorium, Ninette, Manitoba from pulmonary tuberculosis.

1944 Carberry

  • 16th August (cont)
    • 1430 – F/O. J. May (134655) G.D. Nav., and P/O. F.V. Hill (173447) G.D. Nav., Manitoba. Navigation Instructors from United Kingdom on tour in Canada arrived by air for a two day liaison visit.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League Match was played.
    • 1845 – A party of airmen were conveyed by bus to swim in the Y.M.C.A. pool at Brandon.
    • 1900 – The Small bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • The Station Football team played No. 12 S.F.T.S. at Brandon in a Brandon and District Services League match and won 1 – nil.
    • 1945 – The Music Club met in the G.I.S. Block when a recorded programme of classical music was played.
    • 2030 – 0030 – An Airmen’s Dance was held at the Relief Landing Field at Petrel.
    • 2100 – Housey-Housey in the Recreation Hall.
  • 17th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1300 – S/L. G.L. Bell (C25773) Med. and S/L. R.G. Cadham (C3950) Med. visited the Unit from No. 2 T.C. departing at 15.30 hours.
    • 1830 – 1930 – Two Inter Hut Football matches were played.
  • 18th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0845 – Air Commodore J.A. Ashton, Air Officer Commanding, No. 2 Training Command, R.C.A.F., arrived by air accompanied by G/C. H.H. Atkinson, Senior Administrative Officer, No. 2 Training Command, S/L. C.P.
      Leaney (C3053) Admin. and F/L. F.H. Darragh (J7742) G.L. The A.O.C. carried out an inspection of the Unit in the forenoon and a full Station Parade was held at 1400 hours when the A.O.C. inspected the airmen.
      This was followed by a conference of Section Commanders in the Commanding Officer’s Office, after which the A.O.C. and party left by air for 2 T.C. at 16.38 hours.
    • 1500 – F/O. May and P/O. Hill, G.D. Nav. departed by rail for S.A.O.S. Winnipeg.
  • 19th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1130 – A Category “D” accident occurred on the main airfield. Harvard IIB FE.804 ground looped on landing when F/O. V.T. Loyd, F.I., was giving instruction to F/O. H.B. Newton, F.N.I., resulting in serious damage to starboard wing and ailerons.

1944 Carberry

  • 19th August (Cont)
    • 2100 – A semi-formal dance was held in the Officers Mess.
  • 20th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Services were held during the day.
    • 1610 – A Category “D” accident occurred on the main aerodrome. Sgt. D.H. Merrifield, Nav. Instructor, found port brake u/s after a flapless landing and collided with a parked aircraft some 440 yards from landing runway. Sgt. Merrifield was reprimanded and his log book endorsed “gross carelessness”.
  • 21st August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1700 – F/L. H.C. Wylie (C12524) Med. arrived on temporary duty from No. 2 T.C. in connection with the showing of a V.D. Control film.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League Match and an Inter-Hut football league match were played.
    • 1900 – The Station Football XI played No. 17 S.F.T.S. Souris at Souris in a Brandon and District Services League match. Result: Carberry 2, Souris 1.
    • A Rugby trial match was played at Carberry.
    • A recorded Session of popular jazz tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • 1930 – An Inter-Hut Football league match was played.
    • 2000 – The Music Club, Petrel, held a recorded programme of classical music.
  • 22nd August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1830 to 1930 – An Inter-Section Cricket League and two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played.
  • 23rd August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0920 – F/O. M.A. Cowee, Flying Instructor made a successful single engine landing in Anson II FP.767 after failure of port engine at 5000 feet, 20 miles from base. Pupil pilot – 1588302 LAC. Glover, J.S.K. Category “D”.
    • 0930 – No. 1607738 LAC. Batt, C. Pupil Pilot, landed with wheels up whilst practising single engine landings. Category “D”.
    • 1000 – F/L. H.C. Wylie (Med) returned to No. 2 Training Command on cessation of Temporary Duty.
    • 1520 – A second wheels-up landing occurred on the main aerodrome. Pupil pilot – 1586635 LAC. Warren, D.E. Category “D” accident.
    • 1830 – A party of airmen were conveyed to the Y.M.C.A. pool at Brandon for swimming.
    • 1900 – An Inter-Hut Football match was played.
    • 1945 – The Music Club held its weekly meeting in the G.I.S. Block when a recorded programme of recorded classical music was played.
    • 2100 – Housey-Housey in the Recreation Hall.

1944 Carberry,

  • 24th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1530 – F/L. H.P. Pets (C7925)(T.Arm) arrived by air on temporary duty from No. 2 T.C. in connection with Aircraft Recognition and left by bus for No. 12 S.F.T.S. Brandon at 2000 hours.
    • 1830 to 1930 – An inter-Section Cricket League and two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played off.
  • 25th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying. (15).
    • No Inter Sports Fixtures were held to-day.
  • 26th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying (24).
    • The usual Church Services were hold during the day.
    • The Station XI played No. 3 Wireless School “D” team in Winnipeg and District League.
  • 27th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1545 – S/L. Foster, Chap., left by air on temporary duty to No. Training Command and returned at 23.59 hours on 29th August by rail.
  • 28th August
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0800 – S/L. F.J. Hogg (70312) arrived by air from No. 2 T.C. and left at 2015 hours on 29th August for No. 2 Training Command.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League match was played.
    • 1900 – A Rugby trial match was played at Carberry.
    • 1900 – Recorded session of popular jazz tunes were heard in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • 2000 – Music club – Classical music at Petrel.
  • 29th August
    • Maximum number of hours fit for flying (15).
    • 1830 – Cricket match between Repair Squadron and Rest of Station.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Hut Football league match was played.
    • 1930 – An Inter-hut Football league match was played.
    • G/C. E.J. George and the following Officers arrived to take part in “Court Martial”. S/L. Halter (C14253), S/L. V.C. Boyce (79327), S/L. Hamilton (C1726), W/C. F. Wicks (35171), S/L. H.S. Robbins, and F/Lt. Morris (C1481).

1944 Carberry

  • 30th August
    • Maximum number of hours fit for flying.
    • Accident reported aircraft No. FP.750, pilot F/O. S.G. Ade, forced landed due to engine failure in the air; there were no injuries.
    • S/Ldr. Barrett (Tech.Eng) and F/Lt. Stroud (Tech. Sigs) arrived from A.F.H.Q. for C.T.T.B. by rail and left on 2nd September, for No. 36 S.F.T.S.
    • 1830 – Swimming at Indoor Pool, Brandon Y.MC.A.
    • 1830 – Inter Section Football played.
    • 1830 – Inter Section Cricket played.
    • 1900 – The Inter-Squadron Cross Country Championship was run – 5 miles course.
    • 1945 – Music Club – Classical Music was played in G.I.S. Block.
  • 31st August
    • Maximum number of hours fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Service was held.
    • 1630 – Football – Inter-Hut League played
    • 1930 – Cricket – Inter Section League.
