Please post memories of Penhold 1941-1944 when my father, William Paterson, a Scotdsman from Fife was at Penhold as ground crew. He also played drums in the Dance Band which played in small towns all over Central Alberta! Later he went back for DDay. After the war, he invited Meda Wiancko, whom he met in Red Deer, to marry him. She travelled on a small boat to meet him at Manchester and marry him in Edinburgh on Feb 19, 1946. They lived in Scotland for a year and half, returning to Canada via the Aquitania to settle in Calgary in Spring of 1947. Bill became a Canadian citizen and continued his Dance Band career on weekends for 28 years and worked by day at Lincoln Park, Currie Barracks on airplanes until the base closed in 1964. Having been a barber in Scotland, he gave many haircuts to airmen, family and friends in his home in Bankview/Knobhill. Bill had two children, three grandchilren and together with Meda, watched Calgary grow to almost a million population, until he passed in 2006 after turning 90 years old.
His photos of Penhold are available. Please contact me if you have any memories or photos of Penhold ground crew.
