– P/O E. Statters and Sgt. Kenneth Green (RAF#1321270) were flying with No. 1 Operational Unit at Bagotville, Quebec in May of 1943. Green had finished his EFTS and SFTS in April of that year. The pair were in Course No. 10 at No. 1 OTU that commenced in April 4, 1943 and on May 12 that pair were on a routine flight formation. Green flying a/c No. 20 (serial 5426) and Statters flying a/c No. 7 (serial unknown). The pair got separated while descending through a cloud deck with Statters making it back to Bagotville. Green’s aircraft may of
had a faulty compass and hence getting lost in the clouds. He was seen flying over a logging village about a 100 miles SW of the base and heading east. After a lengthy search, the RCAF found a small lake with a hole in the middle. Local trappers called the station to say that the hole had to have
been made by a falling object. This is where the RCAF concluded where Green crashed and died.
Statters was held back from graduating from Course 10 and finished his training with Course 11.
What happened to Statters after his training at Bagotville is unknown. He survived WWII but I have no clues as to where he went when returning to the UK. There was a F/O E. Statters (151571) who completed an operational tour with 193 Sqn (Typhoons) on 17 December 1944.
Known as ‘Ned’ (usually short for Edwin) he was with the squadron from at least April 44 – possibly
earlier. 2.1.45. No. 3 T.E.U. 178053 P/O G.A. Gough, 151571 F/O E.M. Statters posted from 9 PDC
for Flying Instructor duties.
